About the Lesotho High Altitude Summer Marathon
The High Altitude Summer Marathon is a challenging marathon with 3 distances through the pristine Maluti Mountains in the Kingdom of Lesotho.

The Marathon is a very challenging event even for the most seasoned marathon runner, and yet at the same time affords an invigorating course for the keen athlete. The greatest challenge at such a high altitude for athletes not accustomed to the altitude is breathing.

The course, which takes the runners through picturesque villages and amazing mountain views, is done on flat asphalt and gravel roads. It is marked by steep ascents and descents.
The High Altitude Summer Marathon started in 2002 as the Mokhotlong Marathon, through the Honorable Minister of the Foreign Affairs and Members of parliament for the Mokhotlong constituency, Honorable Mohlabi Tsekoa, it was a 32 Kilometer race which the Mokhotlong business community had promised to support and sponsor.

In 2003 the Ministry of Gender and Youth, Sports and Recreation (MGYSR) by the former Minister ‘Mathabiso Lepono took over the event, under the administration of Lesotho Amateur Athletics Association (LAAA) the marathon changed from a 32 km race to the 42.2km marathon with the addition of 21.2km half marathon and 5 km development race.

It was during this period that the name of the event changed from Mokhotlong Marathon to High Altitude Summer Marathon (HASM).
